While Super Smash Bros. Melee fans have been clawing at any possibility of a re-release, Nintendo has remained silent.
Many fans thought that the old favorite would make a return through the Virtual Console system on the Wii U, and now the Switch, but no such release has happened as of yet.

Melee-hungry fans have taken matters into their own hands. This Reddit thread discusses the possibility of playing Melee on the Wii U, using a software workaround and a Gamecube Controller Adapter designed to play Super Smash Bros. Wii U.
Though this may be a viable way to play Melee on an HDTV (there are other ways), it's not necessarily a good idea. Given the Melee community's history of eschewing Nintendo's plans, modifying a modern console to play the game is likely not going to sit well with the video game giant.
They've cracked down on fan mods in the past, such as Project: M (a hack of Super Smash Bros Brawl), and this is not likely to win them over. Fans that are dying for a re-release of their favorite Smash incarnation should probably stop poking the bear.
