According to Ben "Fishstix" Goldhaber, director of content marketing at Twitch, the English, Korean and French streams of the Overwatch League's inaugural day of competition combined to reach a peak viewership of 415,000 viewers.

Blizzard ran a marketing blitz for the League's premiere that included billboards in participating cities, promoted tweets, and the release of an official Overwatch League app.

Overwatch was also the No. 1 game on Twitch last night and set a personal record of viewers, according to numbers from Twitch posted to Reddit.

Some in the industry, including Goldhaber and Natus Vincere CEO Yevhen Zolotarev, were skeptical of Overwatch's ability to draw in serious viewership. Zolotarev specifically cited reservations about the esport's watchability. But the opening night numbers appear to be a strong first step.
