ESL One Birmingham ESL will be the first Dota 2 Major in the U.K., the organizer announced Tuesday.

The event will take place May 23-27 and feature 12 teams competing for a $1 million prize pool and 1,500 Pro Circuit Points to go toward the Dota 2 Pro Circuit.

The tournament will feature two days of group stage play with the playoffs held in Arena Birmingham from May 25-27. Six teams will receive direct invitations to ESL One Birmingham, and the last six will qualify from regional qualifiers in North America, South America, China, Europe, CIS and Southeast Asia.

James Dean, the managing director at ESL UK, expressed his excitement for the move saying: “This is a dream come true for the ESL UK team and a fantastic win for the UK scene. Dota 2 was the very first tournament we ran just after starting up in 2012. We are honored to have this opportunity and hope to make the UK Dota 2 community extremely proud.”

Virtus.Pro won ESL's last Dota 2 Major, ESL One Katowice, last month. VP has also been on a roll by becoming the first team to qualify for The International 8 based on Dota 2 Pro Circuit points. The most recent Dota 2 Major, PGL Bucharest, took place over the weekend with VP coming out on top again.
