10 best games releasing in August 2025 for PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch
By Ryan Woodrow

The summer drought is nearly over, but before then, we’ve got to get through August, where there is just a small handful of big releases to sink your teeth into. There are, however, a fair few smaller titles on the horizon that look interesting for one reason or another, so if you’re saving money to splash your cash on the big games dropping this Fall, maybe you should pick up an indie title or two instead this month.
Here’s our overview of what the best prospects on offer are, as we cover the biggest games launching in August 2025.
Mafia: The Old Country – August 8
It’s been almost a decade since Mafia 3 launched to a somewhat mixed but positive-leaning response, which is perhaps why Mafia: The Old Country is looking to take the series a bit closer to its roots, while still keeping in a sprinkling of the new ideas 3 brought to the table. A prequel to the first game, you’ll be back in San Celeste in Sicily from Mafia 2 as you look to bring profit and respect to the Torrisi crime family.
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition – August 14
There are a few exciting remakes dropping this month, the first of which is a remake of the first 40k Dawn of War game. It’s a pretty straightforward remaster of the original game, prettying up the lighting and textures and making sure that all the content is there in one package. Combine that with the team’s commitment to keeping the game open for easy modding and community content, and you have what will hopefully be the best way to experience this classic.
Madden NFL 26 – August 14
Summer is a good time for sports, and this year’s annual Madden release is dropping in mid-August. You already know if you’re going to buy this or not. We’re not here to sell you on it, just remind you it’s coming.
Drag x Drive – August 14
Drag x Drive is a game that tries to make full use of the new control opportunities offered by the Nintendo Switch 2, specifically the Joy-Con mouse features. This is a 3v3 wheelchair basketball game where you use each Joy-Con as a mouse to independently control each wheel on the chair, letting you have careful control over direction and speed as you shoot hoops. Like all controller gimmicks, it’ll either be surprisingly fun or an unmitigated disaster, but either way, we’re excited to find out.
Sword of the Sea – August 19
Giant Squid, the developers of Abzu and The Pathless, are back with a game that’s all about surfing on a sword. That alone should be enough to convince you to check this one out, but if that’s not enough, then Giant Squid’s reputation for carefully crafted, beautiful experiences with atmospheric soundscapes and stunning visuals should be.
Gears of War: Reloaded – August 26
The much-hyped remaster of the first Gears of War game is coming at the end of the month, bringing with it all of the previously released DLC for the original in one package. With it comes what’s expected of a remaster: upgraded visuals, improved performance, and in this case, an optional reworked control scheme that implements many of the innovations that have been brought to shooter design since the original game released in 2006.
Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar – August 27
It’s been a while since a full new Story of Seasons game was released in the West, but this one looks like it might be worth the wait, as you’ll be growing crops, selling them at market, and making friends in the latest from the iconic farming-sim series. We understand that there are a lot of games like this out there, but Story of Seasons is the original, so it’s always worth paying attention when it has something new.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – August 28
Completing the trilogy of exciting remakes releasing this month, we have the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, bringing what many consider to be one of the greatest games of all time up to date with modern Unreal Engine 5 graphics, redesigned jungle soundscapes, and more. On top of that is a new damage system that will see Snake’s body and clothing take more detailed hits in combat, plus there are a couple of new game modes to try out on the side.
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance – August 29
The team behind Streets of Rage 4 is now branching out and taking on a new 2D action platformer that looks fast-paced and chaotic in the best ways possible. Like all good ninja games, it looks to be full of fluid combat that makes you feel like a master of the craft, all wrapped up in a package that feels like a classic platformer ported right into the modern age.
Lost Soul Aside – August 29
This title has flown under the radar for many, but that might make it one of the most surprising hits of the year. Lost Soul Aside has been in development since 2016, made by a Chinese studio and published by Sony, though the game will be coming to PC as well as PS5. It’s an action RPG set in a fantasy world, with combat inspired by the likes of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. How it all comes together remains to be seen, but there is a lot of great potential in here.
