We’ve all got Nintendo Switch 2 units now, but if you haven’t been digging through the settings menus and have instead been playing video games, then you might not have noticed a bunch of important settings that you should adjust immediately. We've also got more tips and advice in our Switch 2 FAQ.

These settings can upload screenshots to your mobile device automatically, ensure your games are lag-free, stop your controllers from not working, save your console’s battery, and more. Make sure to read through each setting in detail before you adjust anything on your console, but these are the settings we recommend you adjust ASAP.

Automatic capture uploads

If you go into the Capture menu and use the cog icon to enter Upload Settings, you can activate Automatic Uploads. This will upload your capture to Nintendo’s servers automatically, and then you can download them to your mobile device using the Nintendo Switch app. This is a fast and efficient transfer method that’s much better than what we had for the original Nintendo Switch, and we recommend turning this on.

Mute GameChat by default

When you open up the GameChat menu with the C button, you can change your GameChat settings, and we recommend you have your microphone muted when you first enter a GameChat conversation. It’s just convenient and polite.

Calibrate HDR

If you’re using a HDR-capable TV, you should absolutely use the console’s HDR calibration option in the settings menu. This will allow you to adjust HDR output to suit your TV, just make sure to not make the game so bright that it’s uncomfortable to view.

Your preferred mouse sensitivity

You can always adjust the sensitivity of the MouseCon or any USB mouse that you plug into the system. You can’t quite fine-tune the sensitivity as we’d like, but you should still make sure you’re using a setting that suits you.

Auto low-latency mode

Many new TV displays support low-latency mode for video games, and as long as this is support, your Nintendo Switch 2 can force the TV it’s connected to to enable low latency mode. This is very handy, and if you’re not already playing in low-latency mode with your new TV, this setting will ensure that you are.

Battery saver mode

Dig into the System settings, and you’ll see an option to limit the console’s battery to 90% charge. This will actually ensure that your Nintendo Switch 2 battery holds charge better in the future, as batteries that are consistently at 100% charge will lose their overall voltage over time, as some Switch 1 users will attest to. If you keep your Switch 2 docked a majority of the time, or even leave it charging overnight regularly, then you should limit the charge to 90% to ensure it works well into the future.

Update your controllers

There is an update available for your Nintendo Switch 2 JoyCon, and the console doesn’t even force you to install it. You can apply the update to your connected controllers in the Controllers menu, and this can actually ensure that your JoyCon don’t lose charge and fail to turn on in the future.
