While May normally marks the beginning of the summer quiet period in gaming releases, 2025 isn’t letting up. With the Switch 2’s launch coming at the start of June a lot of games are trying to beat it out the door, including a couple of major franchises that we’ve been waiting on for a while, like Doom and Elden Ring.

Here are the best games releasing in May 2025.

Sonic Rumble – May 8

Sonic and Knuckles running through Green Hill Zone while Amy waves them on
Sonic Rumble / Sega

A new Sonic the Hedgehog game is almost upon us, and it’s flown a bit under the radar. Releasing on iOS, Android, and Windows, Sonic Rumble looks to be a Fall Guys-esque 32-player battle royale game with all the Sonic cast in their cutest possible chibi form. Sonic has seen success with a mobile-first approach lately, with the Apple Arcade exclusive Sonic Dream Team being a big hit, so hopefully this will follow suit.

The Midnight Walk – May 8

Strange clay creatures reaching out for a smaller creature with fire coming out the top of their head.
The Midnight Walk / Fast Travel Games

The Midnight Walk is one of the most anticipated indie titles for May, and just one screenshot is enough to see why. This dark fantasy adventure looks like Tim Burton’s style got somehow even more depressing and disturbing, with real clay models being used for the majority of characters.

Revenge of the Savage Planet – May 8

Someone in an astronaut costume grappling to something off screen with a whip made of yellow energy.
Revenge of the Savage Planet / Raccoon Logic Studios

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a sequel to a 2020 game that flew a bit under the radar but received a fair bit of praise from anyone who played it. This title brings back the colourful cartoony style as you adventure around the titular savage planet, this time centering itself as a co-op experience, though it can still be played alone.

Yes, Your Grace 2: Snowfall – May 8

A pixel-art medieval encapment out in the woods at dusk.
Yes, Your Grace 2: Snowfall / Brave At Night

Yes, Your Grace was a big indie hit a couple of years ago as it told a great story that you could influence in all sorts of different ways as you managed your kingdom from your throne, answering the concerns and demands of your citizens and your court. This sprawlling adventure captured the imagination of many and this sequel promises to do the same but better.

Doom: The Dark Ages – May 15

Doom: The Dark Ages / Bethesda

Easily one of the biggest launches this month, this marks the third game in the revived Doom trilogy. Both preceding games received near-universal acclaim, and there’s no reason to think Dark Ages will be any different, as early previews have touted the brilliance of the new additions, like the shield, to make the fast-paced gore-fest better than ever.

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 – May 16

Ken and Terry ready to do battle.
Capcom vs SNK 2 / Capcom

After the success of the first collection, it was only a matter of time until we got another. This collection brings together:

  • Plasma Sowrd: Nightmare of Bilstein
  • Power Stone
  • Power Stone 2
  • Capcom vs SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro
  • Project Justice
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper
  • Capcom vs SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001
  • Capcom Fighting Evolution

If you like classic Capcom fighting games, then this will give you plenty to dig into.

Monster Train 2 – May 21

Monsters on a train with a hand of cards at the bottom of the screen.
Monster Train 2 / Big Fan Games

It’s a big month for sequels to recent hit indie titles, as Monster Train follows up on the 2020 with the same three-tiered deckbuilding action in a bigger and better package. The original was touted as being extremely addictive and one of the best the genre has to offer and previews have shown that Monster Train 2 will be no different.

Lynked: Banner of the Spark – May 22

A guy beating up some monsters while a notification says "Area Reclaimed!"
Lynked: Banner of Sparks / Dreamhaven

Calling itself a rogue-life RPG, Lynked is a game where you build a home base, prepare your defenses, and then fight wave after wave of monsters that try to take you down. It’s received high praise all throughout its early access period, but is now ready to hit 1.0 on May 22, making it the perfect time to jump in.

Nice Day for Fishing – May 29

A woman grabbed by a giant squid, with Baelin trying to wrest her free using his fishing rod.
Nice Day for Fishing / Team17

Based on the YouTube sketch series, Epic NPC Man, Nice Day for Fishing sees you go on an adventure to catch the biggest and greatest fishes the world of Azerim has ever seen. Playing as one of the NPCs in the fictional MMORPG of Skycraft, you’ll spend some of your time peacefully fishing and other times doing battle with creatures of the sea, with your fishing rod your only tool. It’s sure to be an epic adventure, or at the very least, a top-tier fishing game.

Elden Ring: Nightreign – May 30

A person being flown over a landscpae by a massive blue bird.
Elden Ring Nightreign / FromSoftware

FromSoftware is taking their gameplay style in a new direction with Nightreign, as this standalone game set in the Elden Ring universe sees you jump into a world with up to two friends and face procedurally generated challenges in the Land Between. It promises to bring all the soulslike action that makes Elden Ring great while mixing up the gameplay and letting you tackle bosses with your friends.
