The Outer Worlds 2 is a game that isn’t afraid to force you to make difficult choices, and it makes it clear in the very first mission, when you have a choice of which way you want to make your way through Horizon Point. Whichever way you go, your team will go the other way, and you’ll meet up later. We’ll explain the differences between the two options and what the consequences are.

This isn't the only choice you'll have to make in the opening mission. For more, check out our guide on where to find Cadet Corbin's appraisal.

If you go through Security Ops – Outer Worlds 2

Security Ops is the stealthy route. If you go through here, you’ll get the stealth and sneak attack tutorials along with a knife that you can use to one-shot most enemies in the opening areas of the game, provided you’re sneaky enough.

When you make it out the other side, a huge explosion will take out most of your other teammates. In this route, you’ll find Niles unconscious with VAL looking after him. You’ll need to continue on your mission and leave him there.

Niles will survive, but this way he won’t know exactly what happened when he wakes out.

If you go through Central Dispatch – Outer Worlds 2

Central Dispatch is more of a run-and-gun section where you’ll be taught about using your gadgets in a more action-oriented section of gameplay.

Getting out the other side will play out similarly, only this time Niles will be awake when you find him – though still heavily injured. This will give you an opportunity to talk to him as VAL tends to him. He will gift you his rifle for the rest of the mission, and it will allow you to give him a more positive disposition towards you. Niles will still survive in this route.

Should you go through Security Ops or Central Dispatch? – Outer Worlds 2

This choice doesn’t matter too much, as you get roughly the same amount of XP either way, and since the game’s skill system doesn’t require you to actually use the skill to improve it, it’s pretty much down to whether you prefer sneaking or shooting gameplay more. The only notable advantage of Central Dispatch is that you’ll get more dialogue with Niles, which will let you get to know him better as he’ll become one of your main companions in the game, but it’s no major loss if you skip it.
