Best Pokémon for Ting-Lu Tera Raid: how to beat the shiny Ting-Lu event

Here's how to defeat the powerful legendary Pokémon raid
Nintendo

The Pokémon Company is in the middle of a batch of special event raids in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that could see players rewarded with rare and exclusive shiny variants of legendary Pokémon for the first time. The first of these raids saw players facing off against a shiny Wo-Chien, while the second saw players taking down a shiny Chien-Pao – both of which were ultimately successful – and now it’s time for the third of the legendary Treasure Pokémon, Ting-Lu.

This guide will give you everything you need to know about Ting-Lu’s move set and the best counters for it in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Shiny Ting-Lu raid stats, moves – Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

With the Ting-Lu event raid live, we have the full details for the powerful legendary Pokémon below:

Shiny Ting-Lu – Level 75

  • Nature: Impish
  • Ability: Vessel of Ruin
  • Tera Type: Ground
  • Moves: Stomping Tantrum, Stone Edge, Snarl, Heavy Slam, Ruination, Sandstorm

Ting-Lu, like the other Treasures of Ruin, has an annoying ability in Vessel of Ruin, which lowers the special attack of opposing Pokémon by 25%. Thankfully, being a 5 star raid at level 75, it’s not enough to make for a major barrier to victory.

In this raid, Ting-Lu will always start with the move Ruination, which halves the HP of a Pokémon selected at random. It also has moves like Stomping Tantrum, Stone Edge, and Heavy Slam, all of which are fairly damaging and can be frustrating to deal with.

Snarl and Sandstorm aren’t too much of a worry, thankfully, even if Sandstorm can make some moves inaccurate. We won’t be using those moves for the most part, and with one Pokémon we’ll be replacing it pretty quickly, anyway.

A Terastalized Teal Mask Ogerpon in a Tera raid against shiny Ting-Lu
Nintendo

With all we know about Ting-Lu, we need something that ideally can withstand a few hits from a decently powerful physical attacker, and do damage that’s good against Ground-types, which isn’t too much of a challenge. Here are our picks:

Ogerpon

Much like the raid against Wo-Chien and Chien-Pao, Ogerpon is a fantastic choice for dealing with Ting-Lu — although this time we won’t be using its Hearthflame form. Here’s our recommended set for it:

Ogerpon (Teal Mask) – Level 100

  • Item: Shell Bell
  • Nature: Adamant
  • Ability: Defiant/Embody Aspect
  • Tera Type: Fire
  • Moves: Ivy Cudgel, Sunny Day, Swords Dance, Synthesis

Ogerpon’s Teal Mask form keeps it as a pure Grass-type Pokémon, which makes it neutrally defensive to most of Ting-Lu’s moves but offers a big boost to damage. It has the excellent ability Defiant while not Terastalized, which increases its physical attack whenever a stat is dropped — which is going to happen somewhat frequently when Ting-Lu uses Snarl. Its signature move, Ivy Cudgel, stays a Grass-type move while in this form, deals 100 base damage, and has a high critical hit ratio, making it a fantastic attacking move for this raid.

The flow of the raid is fairly simple, whether you’re with allies or going it alone. On the first turn, you’ll want to use Sunny Day, which clears the sandstorm and turns on the increased Synthesis healing. After that, use Ivy Cudgel until you’ve built up Terastalization, but don’t Terastalize until Ting-Lu’s popped its shield up.

Once those shields are up, you’re free to Terastalize, though it’s worth noting that you’ll lose the Defiant ability, so you might want to pop a Swords Dance or two. The equipped Shell Bell will keep you very healthy – a fun side effect of using the Teal Mask form – but you can use a Synthesis as needed if things get dicey. Just keep throwing Ivy Cudgels at Ting-Lu and it should be a very easy win.

This is an extremely consistent and solid strategy while soloing, and it gets even better with multiple raiders — with three or four Ogerpon in a raiding party, you should easily finish it off with more than half of the timer left.

Serperior

Serperior is a great option, in part because many players participating in raids will likely already have one that’s basically ready to go thanks to a past 7-star raid. It’s also got good typing, a great move pool, and a perfect ability for this raid.

Serperior – Level 100

  • Item: Shell Bell
  • Nature: Modest
  • Ability: Contrary
  • Tera Type: Grass
  • Moves: Leaf Storm, Breaking Swipe, Reflect, Gastro Acid

Serperior is a fantastic special attacker with a plenty wide move pool that makes quick work of this raid. Serperior’s secret weapon is its ability Contrary, which reverses any stat changes — what would normally be a stat drop turns into a stat boost, and vice versa. This comes in handy when Ting-Lu uses Snarl, and when Serperior uses Leaf Storm, both of which usually lower special attack.

Depending on your team composition, you’ll want to start with either Reflect or Gastro Acid, which will either reduce incoming damage from Ting-Lu or suppress its annoying ability, respectively. Feel it out and do what feels right in the moment.

From there, use a few Breaking Swipes to build up your Tera charge while simultaneously lowering Ting-Lu’s physical attack, then Terastalize and switch over to Leaf Storm. You should absolutely shred through Ting-Lu’s shield, and once it’s down you should have enough special attack boosts to one-shot the legendary Pokémon with ease.

How to catch shiny Ting-Lu - Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Even if you defeat Ting-Lu, you won’t be able to catch it. That’s because this raid works a little bit differently to most raids — in order to get a shiny Ting-Lu, there needs to be 1,000,000 successful raids across the entire playerbase. If successful, everyone can get a shiny Ting-Lu as a mystery gift.

The rewards for completing the raid are quite good, and include a whole host of XP Candy, Tera Shards, and Herba Mystica for making shiny sandwiches, so it’s not a bad idea to knock out as many as you can before the event ends on August 17.
