Civilization 7: Tides of Power featuring Blackbeard will be free to claim after release
By Marco Wutz

Firaxis has announced that the next DLC for Civilization 7: Tides of Power will bring Edward Teach alias Blackbeard and Sayyida Al Hurra to the game as new leaders, while Tonga, Republic of Pirates, Ottomans, and Iceland will be available as fresh civilizations.
The Great Lighthouse and Nan Madol will join the line-up of Great Wonders, while the Great Blue Hole and the Mapu’a Vaea Blowholes join as Natural Wonders.
The first half of the expansion will go live on November 4, 2025, and can be claimed for free by all owners of Civilization 7 until January 5, 2026. The second half comes out in December 2025 and is included in the free offer.
One day prior to the expansion’s release, a gameplay update working on naval-themed areas will be published. This includes the Harbor as a new warehouse building and the Privateer — this unit can be used to freely plunder other civilizations regardless of diplomatic status.
The seas themselves will undergo a change as well: Crabs, Turtles, and Cowries join as new water-based resources along with the land-based Pitch. The Atoll terrain type can appear on Deep Ocean tiles to block movement, while Lotus terrain can spawn on Lakes to provide more Food and Gold. Ocean tiles will also be workable in the Modern Age — or in the Exploration Age, if you’re Hawai’i.
Naval combat is getting an overhaul as well, ships now being divided into light and heavy classes that fight as melee and ranged units, respectively.
Civilization 7 lead designer Ed Beach also revealed that the team is working on ways to let players use a single civilization throughout a playthrough — it looks like every innovation in Civilization 7 is slowly getting rolled back due to fan feedback.
