EA Sports teases College Basketball return, 2K promptly does the same

Following the success of College Football, EA is looking to return to the court — and brings 2K along.

EA Sports is making a College Basketball game. In a teaser on social media, the studio posted an image of a basketball with its logo, accompanied by the message “Bring the Madness. Let’s run it back.” It also included the hashtag “#CBB” — short for College Basketball.

EA’s own College Sports account responded to the teaser, writing “There’s nothing like College Sports” to further confirm what this teaser is about.

With NBA’s licenses being firmly in the grasp of EA’s rival 2K Games and the studio’s efforts to bring back College Football paying off massively, an attempt to regain some basketball market share via the college route is a clever play from EA Sports.

However, it looks like EA isn’t the only developer with that idea. 2K’s own NBA 2K account made a post saying “The campus has been quiet for too long” in response to a fan writing that it should make its own college basketball game, implying that something along those lines might be in the works.

EA used to develop and publish the NCAA Basketball series – known as NCAA March Madness for most of its history – from 1998 to 2009 before halting the franchise’s development. 2K’s own college basketball series was discontinued one year earlier.

NCAA Basketball 10 is not the last basketball game the company published, however. EA’s NBA Live series did last until 2018, giving NBA Live 19 the honor of being EA’s latest basketball sim — a status that won’t last for eternity, as the College Basketball tease implies.
