Final Fantasy 16 gets a surprise Xbox release, with 7 Remake coming later this year

Surprise! Final Fantasy 16 is now available on Xbox, after a lengthy two-year exclusivity period for the game that saw it locked to the PS5.
The shock release was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, where Square Enix revealed that the game would be available immediately after the show on Xbox. In a follow-up post on the Square Enix website, the company revealed that the title would be a Play Anywhere game, with both standard and complete editions available, the latter coming with all DLC previously released for the game, which is also all available on Xbox today.
There’s also a demo available on Xbox Series X|S for Final Fantasy 16, which lets players try out the game’s prologue, including the first Eikon battle, as well as a trial mode that lets you try out some more combat scenarios. The non-trial section of the demo will carry over into the main game if you choose to purchase it, so there’s no reason not to check it out first if you’re interested.
In addition to the surprise release of Final Fantasy 16, Square Enix also revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is set to be released on Xbox Series X|S later this year. Square says that the game will be available in the Winter, likely around the same time that the previously announced Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game becomes available, but specifics were not revealed during the show or in the blog post after.
Like Final Fantasy 16, 7 Remake Intergrade will be a Play Anywhere title, so those who purchase the game on the Xbox store will be able to play it on both Xbox Series X|S and PC without having to buy it a second time.
