Free content update for Frostpunk 2 overhauls heat system and returns Serenity Mode

11 bit Studios has released a major content update for survival society-builder Frostpunk 2. A brand-new map called The Pit is available in Utopia Mode, offering players the chance to settle the area around a failed generator project either as a starting location or as a colony site.

Players can also challenge the brand-new Tales from the Frostland, a series of narrative quests that now appear during Utopia Mode runs. Each storyline offers a unique Monument Hub reward that mayors can use to decorate their cities with. It wouldn’t be Frostpunk, of course, if there was no risk to balance out the reward: Failing a Tale from the Frostland means game over.

11 bit emphasized that these storylines are built in such a way that modders can easily change or expand them — which is timely, because the official Frostpunk 2 modding tools are now out, having completed their beta testing.

The update also brings back the fan-favorite Serenity Mode from the original game, which offers players the chance to get in a more relaxed campaign with less extreme weather and whiteouts, more resources, and minimal social disorder.

In terms of gameplay, an overhaul of the heat system has massive implications for everything.

“Starting with a redesigned Generator UI for better control and feedback, now you can manage temperature by district, with unique local effects, and consequences when heat is lacking, such as sickness, injuries, or even death. Use the brand-new Heatmap View to visualize district temperature, insulation, heat sources, and proximity bonuses,” the developers describe the adjustments. “The changes affect more than just temperature, they also impact your citizens. They now react to heating shortages through negotiations, protests, or praise. Deaths are now tied to specific factions and communities.”

In addition to that, 11 bit Studios has added nine research topics, two buildings, and one law to the game, rebalancing three technologies and five laws entirely.

11 bit Studios recently announced Frostpunk 1886, a remastered and expanded version of the original game, but promised it would continue updating Frostpunk 2 with free and paid content.
