Back in 2022, a settlement was reached between Epic Games and FTC over alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which claims that Epic used “dark patterns” in Fortnite to trick people into purchasing V-Bucks and items. As part of the settlement, Epic paid a penalty of $520 million, with $245 million of that money being used to refund many of these purchases.

Last year, $72 million of refunds were paid out in the first round and the second one will be coming up soon, making for a total of $126 million refunded from 969,173 payments, but the door is still open for you to get yourself a refund, but you need to do it before July 9, 2025 when applications close.

Firstly, to be eligible for a refund, you need to fit just one of the following requirements:

  • You were charged in-game currency for items you didn’t want between January 2017 and September 2022
  • Your child made charges to your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018
  • Your account was locked between January 2017 and September 2022 after you complained to your credit card company about wrongful charges.

You must also be living in the US and at least 18 years old to complete the form. If you are younger than that, a parent or guardian will need to apply on your behalf.

If you’re eligible, head to the FTC’s Fortnite refund website, and you’ll be able to submit an application. You’ll need either a claim number or your Epic Account ID, which you can find by signing into your account and looking at your account information. The FTC says it expects these payments to be sent out sometime in 2026, depending on how long it takes them to review all the claims.
