Funcom layoffs result in closure of The Outsiders
By Marco Wutz

Funcom, the studio behind Dune: Awakening, announced a restructuring program earlier this month, although it didn’t go into details about its scale at the time. Word of the layoffs’ effects has now reached the public in the form of a statement by The Outsiders founder David Goldfarb, who announced that his studio has been affected by the cost reductions alongside Funcom Stockholm.
Goldfarb stated that the studio behind Metal Hellsinger “will be closing.” The founder recalled some of the studio’s history, including how Metal Hellsinger was created after the team’s prior project had been canceled and the studio was almost shut down.
“We had hoped to do something even better this time. Things don’t always go the way you hope,” he added.
Goldfarb announced that “we are not giving up” and said that the team would try and look for a way to continue “in some new form.”
Funcom acquired a majority stake in The Outsiders back in 2021, roughly one year after its own acquisition by Tencent. Metal Hellsinger, The Outsiders’ unique rhythm shooter, was released in 2022.
