Hades 2 has received its first major patch a month after reaching 1.0 and leaving early access, and it’s made a big change to the game’s true ending after last month’s launch was a disappointment to fans. Spoilers for Hades 2 follow.

When 1.0 dropped and the game’s ending was implemented, fans were not happy with it. After defeating Chronos one final time, Melione tasks Zagreus with confronting and destroying Chronos in the past, but as he goes to do so, he instead talks to Chronos and creates an alternate timeline where the Titan of Time grows up harmoniously with the rest of the family, but only Zagreus and Chronos remember it.

This annoyed fans as they felt it took away Melione’s agency after going through such an epic quest to reach this point and destroy Chronos once and for all. Some even argued that it betrayed Zagreus’ character after everything he went through for his family in the first game.

The new ending doesn’t massively overhaul the events, but it makes a few changes that fans are already saying make a big difference to how things play out. Spoilers for the new ending follow, but existing players who have already beaten the game can create an incantation at Hecate’s cauldron that will let them view the ending again.

This new ending changes it so that Melione, Persephone, and Hades all also remember this alternate timeline, along with the existing one they already experienced, and come to the decision to show Chronos mercy together. Rather than Melione (and by extension, the player) being forced into a path of action she clearly doesn’t want to take, she gets her moment to shine by making the call despite Hecate’s protests, as well as getting to enjoy the memories of a peaceful family life she worked so hard to reclaim.
