The Helldivers 2 Control Group Warbond is coming to PC and PS5 on July 17, 2025, developer Arrowhead has announced. The theme this time is that any new piece of equipment can kill you just as well as it can eliminate the enemy, since it’s all experimental gear that still needs to be tested on the field. Get it? You’re the control group.

The Warbond introduces a new primary weapon, the VG-70 Variable. The Variable is a volley gun with seven barrels and three different firing modes. It can fire on Auto, in which case you can select from three RPM values, Volley, which empties every barrel at once, and Total, which causes the gun to use up its entire stock of ammunition in one glorious blaze — and, yes, this has a high chance of blowing you up along with whatever you’re targeting.

There’s also the G-31 Arc, a light grenade that bounces around while discharging electricity around itself, hitting every unfortunate soul in the near vicinity… friend or foe.

The PLAS-45 Epoch support weapon can be charged to launch a concentrated plasma sphere, which is very effective. Do note that you can overcharge this weapon, which causes the plasma sphere to go unstable and blow up the wielder.

Next up is the A/LAS-98 Laser Sentry. Its ammunition canisters have been exchanged for a heatsink, allowing this turret to continue firing infinitely… on paper. In practice, overheating is still a risk and when that happens… well, you know. It goes boom.

Powered by technology stolen from the Illuminate, the LIFT-182 Warp Pack stratagem allows Helldivers to create a – somewhat – stable wormhole for short-range teleportation. Note that wormholes won’t remain stable for long and repeated uses might cause them to collapse — which is bad news for anyone currently using it.

When it comes to armor, Control Group brings the AD-26 Bleeding Edge (Medium Armor) and AD-49 Apollonian (Heavy Armor) to the table along with new capes and emotes. Since testing equipment in the field is dangerous work, both armor sets come with the Adreno-Defibrillator. This passive skill can revive a Helldiver with full health after they’ve fallen — once per battle. Also, you’ll continuously lose health once you’re back up. It’s not a perfect system, evidently.

Helldivers 2 is set to come to Xbox Series X|S in August 2025.
