Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem adds ridable nautilus, zombie horses, and spears

Minecraft Live broadcast over the weekend with the team and Mojang unveiling what it has been working on for the final Minecraft update of the year, called the Mounts of Mayhem update. It adds a couple of new rideable mobs and adds the first new tiered weapon to Minecraft in a very long time.

Ridable Nautilus

It’s been possible to get Nautilus shells as an item in Minecraft for quite a long time, found in loot chests and occasionally dropped by Drowned. Still, after all this time, they’re finally available as a mob in their own right, and more than that, they can be tamed and ridden.

By feeding a Nautilus some pufferfish, you can tame them, allowing you to equip them with both a saddle and armour to ride them underwater. What’s more, while riding them, you’ll have infinite breath, preventing you from drowning, meaning you can explore and build in oceans easier than ever before.

Not all of the Nautilus are so friendly though, as Zombie Nautilus can also spawn. While technically neutral, these mobs will often spawn with a trident-wielding Drowned atop them, making them an extremely dangerous foe.

Zombie Horses

The zombie horse is an odd case, as they’ve technically been in the game since 2013, but they haven’t been obtainable in survival mode until this update. Now, at night in plains and savannah biomes, it’s possible for a zombie riding a zombie horse to spawn and, much like the rare skeletal horses, if you can kill the rider while leaving the horse alive, you can tame and ride it for yourself.

Be careful though, as like all other undead mobs, this horse will burn in the sunlight, so it will need a roof over its head.

Spear

The Spear is the latest weapon added to Minecraft, and it’s designed to be used while riding mounts. Spears have a jab attack that deals damage at a decent range, but their most powerful move is the charge attack, where you hold the spear out while charging forward on your mount. Successfully striking a target with this attack will knock them off their mount and deal damage based on how fast you were travelling when you hit them.

This is all that’s been announced for now, but with most drops, a few smaller features are usually announced and added during the snapshot/preview process, so hopefully there’s more excitement to come.
