New expansion for Age of Empires 4 to be revealed at Gamescom 2025

Microsoft has dropped a couple of Age of Empires announcements in a post celebrating the series’ achievements in the first half of the year. The company confirmed that it will reveal a brand-new expansion for Age of Empires 4 at Gamescom 2025.
This new AoE4 expansion will contain a fresh game mode that includes “core elements from other genres” and therefore sounds quite experimental for the RTS. The DLC is expected to launch in Fall 2025.
AoE4’s latest expansion, Knights of Cross and Rose, was released earlier this year.
However, AoE4 is not the only game of the series expecting new content. In the same post, Microsoft teased another DLC for the eternal Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition — and the community is pretty sure that it’s about Alexander the Great. The three screenshots included with the announcement of the as-yet unnamed DLC seem to be depicting three battlefields important to Alexander’s history: Gaugamela, the Hydaspes, and the Granicus.
Alexander kicked off his conquest of the Persian Empire with the Battle at the Granicus River, defeating Persia’s satraps of Asia Minor while crossing the river. He later crushed the Persian Great King’s final attempt at stopping his invasion at Gaugamela. The Battle of the Hydaspes River saw Alexander victorious over Indian monarch Porus, who subsequently surrendered.
The sentence “We can share a couple of images that chronicle this great upcoming adventure” spills fuel on the fire with its reference to Chronicles: Battle for Greece and the adventurous nature of Alexander’s expedition.
This upcoming release, therefore, will seemingly continue the trend of AoE2 expanding into time periods far outside its original medieval scope. It's unclear if the AoE2 expansion will also be fully revealed at Gamescom.
But there’s more: Age of Empires Mobile, which was released for iOS and Android last year, will get a PC client with mouse and keyboard controls, 4K visuals, Steam and Xbox Live integration, and more. Gamescom attendees will be able to try it out first-hand at the event.
The previously announced Age of Mythology: Retold – Heavenly Spear DLC, which introduces factions from Japanese mythology into the game, is still on track to be released on September 30, 2025.
