PS5 keeps pace with PS4 as sales top 80 million
By Marco Wutz

Sony Group has published its latest financial report, detailing the results of the quarter that ended on June 30, 2025. The PS5 sold another 2.5 million units in this timeframe, reaching 80.3m shipments in total — that’s about 100,000 units more than were sold last year in the same window.
The PS5 continues to compare quite well compared to its successful predecessor when it comes to sales: Comparing both consoles’ sales at this point in their respective lifecycles, Sony’s current-gen offering trails the PS4 only by about 2m units. This is very impressive, considering the substantial supply issues the PS5 suffered from at launch due to COVID-19.
In terms of total software sales for both consoles, Sony reported 65.9m games sold this quarter, which is down about 10m compared to the previous quarter, but up over 12m compared to last year. 6.9m of these sales were first-party games, up around one million compared to both time windows.
83% of all software sales for PS4 and PS5 were digital downloads, up 3% from last year and 7% from last quarter — a new historical high for this metric.
According to Sony, PlayStation had 123m Monthly Active Users (MAU) in the observed quarter, up 7m MAU compared to last year and only down 1m compared to the previous quarter.
