Remedy CEO steps down after FBC: Firebreak’s continued underperformance

The company previously issued a profit warning to correct expectations downwards.

Tero Virtala is no longer the CEO of Remedy Entertainment: He stepped down on October 22, 2025, with immediate effect after being at the studio’s helm since August 2016. A successor to the position has not yet been chosen, though co-founder Markus Mäki is taking over as interim CEO for the time being. He, in turn, is succeeded as chairman of the board by Henri Österlund.

“I want to thank Tero Virtala for his substantial contribution to the management of Remedy since 2016. I personally thank Tero for good cooperation and wish him all the best for the future,” Mäki stated.

The leadership shake-up comes after a disastrous year for Remedy: Its live-service pivot with FBC: Firebreak has not worked out at all, the game flopping in all regards and missing all of its sales targets.

This led to Remedy issuing a profit warning earlier this month, correcting its financial forecasts for the ongoing financial year downwards after a string of already disappointing results.

“FBC: Firebreak was launched on June 17. In its 2025 half-year financial report, Remedy reported that FBC: Firebreak’s launch-phase consumer sales underperformed. After the launch, the company rapidly developed the game based on player feedback and released multiple updates. On September 29, Remedy released the first Major Update titled Breakpoint for FBC: Firebreak, which brought significant changes to the game’s core experience. Despite improved player and sales metrics after the update, sales have not reached Remedy’s internal targets,” Remedy explained in the notice.

Alan Wake 2, the company’s previous game, received global acclaim from critics and users, but struggled to turn a profit for the studio due to slow sales despite its warm reception.
