Wargaming will shut down Steel Hunters only months after Early Access launch

Another live-service shooter bites the dust.

Wargaming has announced that it will shut down the servers for Steel Hunters in October 2025, taking the game offline permanently.

The mech-based extraction shooter was released into Early Access earlier in 2025, but only managed a peak concurrent player count short of 4,500. This quickly fell off to a daily CCU peak of just around 100 players. With Steam reviews being stuck on “Mixed” as well, it looks like the developer sees no point in trying to turn the tide.

“Today we share difficult news: we've made the decision to sunset Steel Hunters. You've given us so much passion and support but unfortunately we've come to the conclusion that continuing development is not sustainable. We know this isn't the news anyone wanted to hear and we genuinely share in your disappointment,” Wargaming stated.

Steel Hunters will remain available for 90 days with the shutdown coming on October 8, 2025. Until then, Wargaming hopes to roll out a custom games feature to allow players to set up last matches with their friends and wants to hold a goodbye tournament for the community.

The studio is also unlocking every available Hunter for all game modes, including mechs that haven’t even been released yet.

Steel Hunters had been in development for over three years and was supposed to alleviate the studio’s dependence on its powerhouse IPs World of Tanks and World of Warships by building up another strong live-service title of a different genre.
