The playoffs of the League Champions Korea Summer Split has started, with a best-of-three series between reigning champions SK Telecom T1 and contenders Afreeca Freecs kicking it off in round one. With a victory required in order to progress closer to winning the championship, both teams needed to best their opponent in this series.
SK Telecom T1 2-0 Afreeca Freecs
Afreec-ing Big Mistakes
Afreeca Freecs haven't looked too shabby in the Summer Split, finishing the regular season in fifth place and securing the final playoffs seed. However, the pressure evidently got to them as the team began making a number of silly mistakes that eventually resulted in them dropping two games.
Afreeca jungler Lee "Spirit" Da-yun made a fatal mistake in the early game, where he started his jungle path without buying any items - a rookie mistake that put him far behind opponent Han "Peanut" Wang-ho. SKT managed to gain a lead in every lane and snowball their victory over Afreeca to claim a clean sweep.
Former Teammate Rivalry
It was a blast from the past for SKT mid laner Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok as he took on former teammate Jang "MaRin" Gyeong-Hwan, who previously played for SK Telecom T1 and helped the team win a World Championship. Afterward, MaRin made the move to Afreeca and has been vital to the team's success.
Unfortunately, the odds were in Faker's favor, as MaRin kept repeating the same mistakes that he has been making all season. He would position too far forward despite Spirit being at a disadvantage and be wiped out before he could react.
With the series win, SK Telecom T1 will now progress to round two where they must take down Samsung Galaxy in a match reminiscent of the 2016 World Championship Finals.
