NRG Esports, owners of Overwatch League team San Francisco Shock, announced an esports partnership with University of California, Berkeley on Wednesday that features a focus on mental health and women in gaming.
The partnership between NRG esports and UC Berkeley -- specifically Cal Esports, the university's esports program -- has efforts to create a "new campus esports community center at the Foothill complex in fall 2018," in collaboration with other sponsors. Additionally, NRG is now a premier sponsor of Cal Esports.
Andy Miller, owner of NRG and San Francisco Shock, expressed his thoughts on the partnership in ta news release. "By investing in this esports program, we’re investing in the future: technology, reinvented community, new learning models, and of course, the students,” he said in a statement.
The partnership also has a focus on women in gaming. It will "highlight a mindfulness, health and wellness program for gamers, as well as a Women in Gaming Initiative to create a gateway for more female gamers to play more games, with more confidence. UC Berkeley student and gaming community leader Cherie Lin, who is also co-leading the Women in Gaming initiative, believes UC Berkeley is full of active and committed gamers, brought together by their shared passion for esports," the release read.
