Mike Sepso, a Major League Gaming co-founder and former Activision Blizzard senior vice president, has joined the New York Excelsior as a strategic partner to the ownership group, according to a Thursday press release from the team.

Sepso recently left Activision Blizzard after playing an integral part in the design and launch of the Overwatch League. During his tenure, he oversaw global commercial partnerships for the company's esports division and set industry records in sponsorship sales. Previously, at MLG, he was instrumental in signing the first major non-endemic sponsors in esports, including Dr. Pepper, Old Spice and Boost Mobile.

Sepso will bring entrepreneurial vision, global relationships and 16 years of executive experience in esports to bear in his new role at NYXL.

Scott Wilpon, partner at Sterling.VC, shared his thoughts on Sepso's addition to the team.

“With nearly 20 years of experience in esports, Mike brings valuable expertise across sponsorship, media rights and a number of other areas that will help us develop this business and engage our fans in new and unique ways,” said Wilpon. “Mike is a force within the esports community and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to the team."

The NYXL will return to competition when Overwatch League Season 2 begins Feb. 14.
