League of Legends Linux installations are, by their very nature, the most complicated League of Legends installations possible. Linux's ethos of absolute customizability allows supreme freedom, but it also makes doing even the most basic actions at least slightly more complicated.
It doesn't help that League of Legends doesn't yet have built in support for Linux, forcing Linux users to seek out workarounds. But where there's a will, there's a way. Here's how to install League of Legends on Linux.
Please @RiotSupport think of a support for Linux. I no longer want to use Windows on my PC, and the only game that prevents me is the league of legends. The other games are already working perfectly, either natively or steam play. thanks for listening!— Yuuki (@onayogames) January 8, 2019
League of Legends Linux: How to Install
The first step to installing League of Legends on Linux is to install Lutris. Lutris handles installing Wine, which allows Linux to run Windows programs such as League of Legends. It's also able to install League of Legends directly.
Head over to Lutris in your browser and find the League of Legends page. Log into your Lutris account, then click on the "Install" button below the slideshow of screenshots. Lutris will open and ask you if you want to begin the install.
Click "Continue," then select where you'd like League of Legends to install. Once that's done, Lutrix will go about setting up the Wine prefix for optimal results. When it finishes, it will bring up the normal Windows League of Legends installer. Proceed through it as normal, keeping in mind that the install location will be relative to the Wine prefix.
When the installation finishes, don't open League of Legends right away. Lutrix needs time to finish setting up elements of the Windows operating system. You'll know that process is complete when it asks if you want an applications shortcut.
Next, you'll likely want to update the version of Wine that Lutrix installed. At the top of your Lutris window, click the "Runners" icon. Scroll down to Wine and click the "Manage Versions" button. Check off the latest version of Wine Staging to start the install, then back out to the main Lutris screen when it finishes.
In your Lutris library, right click League of Legends and select "Configure." Select the Runner Options tab along the top. In the field closest to the top of the window, select the version of Wine Staging you just installed, then hit "Save" at the bottom right.
And that's it! You'll now be able to play League of Legends by opening Lutris and clicking on the game's banner image.
