Epic Games released Fortnite back in the summer of 2017, and since then, the game has become one of the most played battle royale games. Because of its immense popularity, Epic Games is continuously cranking out new updates to appease their longtime fans and switch up the meta, although sometimes, they don't quite hit the head on the nail.

Here are seven of the most controversial updates in Fortnite history.

7 Most Controversial Updates in Fortnite History

1. B.R.U.T.E.

Fans were excited to see the return of the beloved Dusty Depot that had been teased in the trailers leading up to the new season release. Unfortunately, along with Dusty Depot, came the unwelcomed B.R.U.T.E mechs. As the most overpowered item in Fortnite history, the two-person vehicle was nearly impossible to defend against due to its rockets and shotguns that were masked by 1,000HP. There were almost no counters, and the hashtag #RemoveTheMech trended worldwide until Epic Games finally nerfed the robots.

2. Infinity Blade

This blade wreaked havoc on competitive play. Located at Polar Peak, the blade wielded insane power that allowed players to gather materials and travel long distances at insane speeds. As icing on the cake, it dealt massive amounts of damage to enemies and was featured on the day of Winter Royale qualifiers. The Infinity Blade ignited a Twitter storm, criticized by prominent pro players who called out Epic Games for their poor decisions. The weapon was then nerfed and vaulted but has seen a return in limited-time modes.

3. Siphon Removed

Siphon was received with open arms because of its ability to grant players health and materials upon elimination. Essentially, players were rewarded for their aggressive play, which made farming materials less of a chore and opened up hot landing spots. Epic Games, around the start of Season 8, however, revealed that they would be going back on their decision and removed Siphon from public matches due to the increasing levels of unhealthy aggression. The developers faced a ton of backlash that season, but it never returned.

4. Planes

Implemented in Season 7, planes could do it all. They broke through barriers, damaged enemies, carried a full squad, and, like the Infinity Blade, were an unwelcomed addition to competitive Fortnite.

5. Vaulting Traps

Traps had been around since Fortnite's release back in September 2017. Lots of professional Fortnite players were on board with Epic Games' decision to vault the traps, but, nonetheless, the decision caused a stir within the Fortnite community.

6. Useless Items

A lot of the items available to players in Fortnite have been underwhelming. Whether its Gliders or Balloons players were pulling out of a chest, the items served little purpose and offered little excitement. It was almost like Epic Games was punishing players for opening up a chest because more desirable items could be found on the floor.

7. Heavy Sniper Rifle Introduced

One of the most overpowered weapons in Fortnite, the heavy sniper rifle, dealt significant damage and was very effective at destroying enemy structures. It was a popular item to grab when found around the map but has since been nerfed following Epic Games' latest update.
