A Brief History of the Hidden Ones in AC Valhalla

A brief history of the Hidden Ones in AC Valhalla must begin in Assassin’s Creed Origins. In Ptolemaic (roughly 30 BCE) Egypt, long before there were Assassins or Templars, the ancient order of the Hidden Ones came into existence. Started by Medjay Bayek (the protagonist of AC: Origins) and his wife Aya. The ideals of the order are largely the same as the Assassins, they are dedicated to protecting people from those who would take away freedoms and oppress, mainly the Templars. During AC: Origins the Hidden Ones spread throughout the Mediterranean world, fighting the early incarnation of the Templars, called The Order, along the way.

Eventually, Julius Caesar becomes a prominent figure in The Order and becomes a focal point in the conflict between the two warring groups. Brutus and Cassius are recruited to join the Hidden Ones and conspire with the Hidden Ones to assassinate Julius Caesar. Obviously, this all culminates in the most famous assassination of all-time, and for a bit of historical realism, the developers made sure to get Caesar’s last words right.

Many think that Caesar’s last words were “Et tu, Brutus?” meaning “You too, Brutus?” This line actually comes from the Shakespeare play “Julius Caesar.” Historians have different reports on what his last words were, or whether he said anything at all. However, the historian Suetonius reported his last words as “You too, child?” So props to AC: Origins for getting that right.

After AC: Origins the organization spreads quickly across the known world, from China to England. But the Order spreads alongside it, leading to conflicts at every step. We’ll spare you spoilers for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s storyline, as that features prominently into the history of the Hidden Ones, but it is important to know how the Assassins and the Hidden Ones connect.

Just a few hundred years after Assassin’s Creed Valhalla come the Crusades, in the Levant is where the Hidden Ones are reorganized as the Assassins. This is when the first game takes place. For those looking to learn more about the real history behind Assassin’s Creed, take a look at this
