St Albane's Abbey key isn't actually located at the abbey if you're not in the right quest. You'll need to be in Pilgrimage to St Albanes if you want to explore the entire abbey. You'll get the key automatically in the quest. You'll get the quest after Brewing Rebellion, which is obtained after pledging at Oxenefordschire.

Before you get the abbey key, you'll need the key to the crypt. It's held by an elite enemy. He's huge so you won't miss him.

The abbey key is held by a priest guarding the cell in the crypt. You can either bribe him, threaten him or kill him for the key.

If you're raiding the Abbey in the quest, everything should be laid out for you. If not, perhaps it would be best to wait until you get the quest, as you'll be heading in there anyway. You shouldn't miss anything if you're in the quest proper.
