Apex Legends Season 10 gave Caustic a buff to his gas traps. Each damage tick deals 5 HP of damage to those caught in the cloud, then increases by one every other tick. Some players were quick to notice that the buff doesn't seem to work the same way on downed players.
After knocking down an opponent, some players have followed up with Caustic's gas trap, expecting to see the damage ramp up with each tick. Instead, the damage has stayed at a consistent 5 HP/s leading many to wonder if this was a bug.
Respawn's Associate Live Balance Designer John "JayBiebs" Larson took to Twitter on Aug. 4 to shed some light on the matter.
"Lil thing we forgot in the patch notes: Caustic gas ticks at a flat 5 on downed players. Wanted to make sure experiments didn't get too sadistic."
Whilst fans were happy to receive some clarity, others asked if there were specific reasons behind the decision.
"Short answer: guns should kill people. Abilities should help facilitate that. Thirsts especially should not be driven by abilities, unless it's a heavy hitting ult with a big cost. Gas is good for a lot of things outside of sheer damage; players at the top end have shown us that."
The developer hasn't specified if this is likely to change in the near future. For now Caustic mains can take some comfort in knowing that, yes, the buff's lack of effect on downed players is intentional. For better or for worse.
