Echo will be the last hero to be added to Overwatch before the release of Overwatch 2, according to game director Jeff Kaplan.

"Yes, currently Echo is the last hero coming to standard Overwatch," Kaplan said in an interview with IGN Nordic and Benelux. "The focus for the next couple of heroes will be on Overwatch 2."

Heroes added to Overwatch 2 will also appear in the original Overwatch, as the two games will support cross-play in their player-vs.-player modes.

Echo's introduction to the Public Test Realm as a damage hero Thursday ruffled feathers in the game's community, as Overwatch features more damage heroes than support and tank heroes combined. Kaplan assured fans that tanks and supports were in development in an interview with Overwatch influencer Stylosa.

"We have tanks and supports in the works," Kaplan said. "There is hero development happening, but I don't want to get people's expectations in the wrong place. We will not be getting another hero this year."

Blizzard has yet to reveal a release date for Overwatch 2. When Kaplan announced the game at BlizzCon 2019, he said it was in early development.
