Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Starters Explained

1. Sprigatito

Sprigatito
Sprigatito, the “Grass Cat” Pokemon / The Pokemon Company

Sprigatito has been described as a “capricious, attention-seeking” grass-type feline—which are definitely two apt descriptions of a cat if we’ve ever seen them. This little kitty’s name is a mix if the word “sprig” which is often used to refer a clipping from a plant and the Spanish word “Gatito” meaning “Kitten.”

This species’ ability is “Overgrow,” which increases the damage its grass-type moves do by 50% when it reaches 30% health or lower. It stands aroun 1’4” and weights nearly 9 lbs.

Could this be the Tiger species we’ve been waiting for? Perhaps, knowing how popular oranges and orange trees are—particularly in Valencia (i.e.: “Valencia Oranges”)—there could be some sort of connection between them?

2. Fuecoco

Fuecoco’s name is an amalgamation of two Spanish words: “fuego” and “cocodrilo.” The implications are pretty obvious when put together side by side but, for those still unsure of the connection, “fuego” means “fire” and “cocodrilo” is “crocodile.”

Its ability is “Blaze”—the fire-type counterpart to Overgrow. When it reaches 30% health or below, its fire-type moves deal 50% more damage. It clocks in at 1’4” and is the heaviest starter, weighing 21.6 lbs.

Developers have described this fire-type as “laidback” and ”preferring to do things at its own pace.” While crocodiles aren’t native to the Iberian Penninsula, they have been sighted in the area on several ocassions.

3. Quaxly

Quaxly

While it may also bear a striking resemblence to a certain popular cartoon duck, Quaxly is apparently known as a “tidy” and “earnest” species. Some fans have taken to calling it “Dapper” among other things.

This Pokemon’s ability is “Torrent,” following suit with Blaze and Overgrow. Its water-types moves do 50% more damage when it falls to 30% health or below. Quaxly is the tallest in the group standing at 1’8”. It weighs 13.4 lbs.

Quaxly is a bit of an outlier when it comes to references from the Iberian Penninsula. It may be a visual tipoff for the White-Headed Duck, a species with a distinct white head and blue bill. Additionally, the beginning of its name—“Qua”—is a homonym for “Cua,” the noise that ducks make in the Spanish language.
