Final Fantasy 16 is all but inevitable given the series's apparent immortality, but Square Enix has yet to reveal much in the way of details about the game. So what do we know about Final Fantasy 16?
Final Fantasy 16: What is Known?
The main focus of speculation on Final Fantasy 16 centers around who will direct the title. Tetsuya Nomura, the director responsible for many of the standout games in the franchise, will likely be too busy with Final Fantasy 7 Remake to also direct Final Fantasy 16.
Final Fantasy 15 director Hajime Tabata left Square Enix after completing that game, making producer and Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida the heir apparent to the series helm. Yoshida has stated in the past a desire to return to the franchise's fantasy roots, so a Final Fantasy 16 under his direction would likely head in that direction.
On the other hand, there is a dark horse candidate to direct. Executive producer Yosuke Saito has said in the past that he would like Nier: Automata director Yoko Taro to work on the series. Taro's eccentric sensibilities would likely represent an even more dramatic shift in the series's tone.
Beyond rumors about directors, next to nothing is known about Final Fantasy 16. Fans will have to wait for more to come to light if they hope for a clear picture of the game.
