Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has been banned from Twitch, and he says it's because he used the term "cracker."
Twitch hit Hasan with the ban after his broadcast Tuesday ended, and he claims it's linked to a debate between himself and his chat about the use of the term as an insult against white people. Two of his moderators had been banned for using the word, and Hasan questioned the validity of those bans.
When his own ban was handed down, Hasan tweeted about the circumstances.
"yes. it is exactly what you think it is," he wrote. "anti white racism for using the term 'cracker.'"
For its part, Twitch is adhering to its standard operating procedure of refusing to comment on suspensions. If Hasan's theory about the reason for his ban is accurate, the decision would be handled under the Twitch Terms of Service section that rules "using hateful slurs, either untargeted or directed towards another individual" is grounds for suspension.
"We allow certain words or terms, which might otherwise violate our policy, to be used in an empowering way or as terms of endearment when such intent is clear," continues the Twitch Terms of Service agreement. "We also make exceptions for slurs in music–and singing along to music–as long as the song itself is not hateful and the slurs are not combined with other discriminating or denigrating content."
It's unclear how long this ban will last. It is Hasan's third.
