Horizon Forbidden West: How to Throw Rocks
In order to throw rocks in Horizon Forbidden West, you'll need to find some. Fortunately, there's no shortage of them around as they can be found almost anywhere. Look on roads for some quick finds.
Once you've collected a rock or two, depending on which item is equipped in the bottom left, you'll need to press Left or Right on the D-Pad and cycle through until the item reads "Rock."
Press the Down button on the D-pad to have Aloy equip the rock. You'll then enter the throwing stance where you can aim it. Press R2 to launch the rock to your desired spot.
Rocks are best used in a stealth capacity. When hiding in tall grass, use a rock to bring an enemy closer to use. Then, hit them with a Silent Strike to (hopefully) bring them down. Rocks act as a distraction so you can use them to guide an enemy to wherever you need them to be.
And that's all there is to it. A simple mechanic, but can prove to be extremely useful when gaining the upperhand.
