Call of Duty: Vanguard's campaign is told through the eyes of different playable characters each with their own military background and expertise. The main characters of the storyline are all inspired by real-world military service personnel. For instance, Polina Petrova is based on the Soviet sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko otherwise known as "Lady Death."

The story is also told out of chronological order and takes place in four different frontlines of World War II. Players will fight in the Pacific War, the Western Front, Eastern Front and the North African campaign.
