Is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy multiplayer?

Being that players are able to take control of Peter Quill as he roams the galaxy, many are wondering if others are able to join them in-game as well since Star-Lord's rag-tag team is comprised of Gamora, Rocket Racoon, Groot and Drax the Destroyer also seem ready to duke it out. Here's a breakdown of whether or not Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy supports multiplayer.

Is Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Multiplayer?

Spearheaded by the efforts of developer Eidos-Montréal and publisher Square Enix, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy invites players to immerse themselves in the world of the hit comic book series in another format — a third-person, action-adventure video game.

At the time of writing, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy does not have multiplayer, nor does its developers seem to have any plans of adding those features to the title down the line.

The game is a single-player experience where players step into the boots of Star-Lord and lead Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket to victory.

In June, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Senior Creative Director Jean-François Dugas told IGN in an interview that the decision to go single-player-only was one that the dev team decided was the best way to execute their vision for the game.

“We started to discuss different opportunities like multiplayer or co-op," Dugas said. "But we were really looking at what Guardians of the Galaxy is, and it’s all about those characters. It’s all about colorful personalities clashing with each other, and sometimes getting along. It’s a mix of all these things, their qualities, their flaws. And we thought, ‘It would be freaking awesome if you could be one of the Guardians, and put you at the center of that to be surrounded by those characters.' And this is how it came to be.”

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is available now on PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch (via cloud streaming) and PC (via Square Enix Store, Steam and Epic Games Store).
