League of Legends Lux Comic: 3 Takeaways from the Second Lux Comic

The second League of Legends Lux comic is out, which means there's more lore to dig through as we get a clearer picture of Demacia's big players.

Issue 2 was written by John O'Bryan, one of the creative minds behind Avatar: The Last Airbender, and illustrated by Marvel's Billy Tan. Together, the two created a much darker version of Demacia than what you might expect if you've only ever seen characters like Lux and Garen on the Summoner's Rift. Here are three big takeaways:

1. Demacia is dark

The first issue of the League of Legends Lux comic gave us an idea of how Demacia treated mages born within its walls, but this new issue cranks that up even more. Sylas' background — being born with magical powers and being used by the mageseekers to find and eliminate magic users — reads like something straight of an X-Men comic.

The kingdom's domineering culture goes deeper than that, though. Toward the end of this issue, Garen tries to force Lux into a political marriage, pushing her over the edge of setting Sylas free.

2. Sylas' lore is being retconned

With the ending of this issue, it looks like Sylas is getting some lore changes. Everything from his meetings with Lux to his history with the mageseekers was fairly consistent with his original biography, but it looks like he might be making his escape a bit early.

In the final panels of the comic, Sylas can be seen blasting a hole in his prison cell's wall using Lux's light magic. This is a pretty stark change from the original story, where he was slated to be executed, and then fought his way out of the mageseeker prison.

3. There's way more to explore in the world of Runeterra

This issue is just the second out of five Marvel-commissioned comics based on the world of Runeterra, but with the rate at which it's moving, there is much more to see than Marvel could ever fit in five issues. Lux's backstory so far is awesome to follow — no doubt — but it would be shocking if Riot Games and Marvel ended their partnership after this run.

This series has readers bristling with questions about the rest of the world. Is Damacia is this grey, what would a story set in Noxus look like? Or Piltover? What other characters' backstories could we see going forward?
