Lionel Messi won his record seventh Ballon d'Or on Monday, beating out some of the best players in the world, including favorite to win it, Robert Lewandowski. The award is the top prize in world football for individuals, and in FIFA 22, winning this award usually leads to having a Team of the Year item in the game's TOTY promo.
Typically, every Ballon d'Or winner has received the highest rated card out of the entire TOTY in FIFA, and in most cases the card is 99 rated. For FIFA 21 last year, however, there was no Ballon d'Or so we didn't have a 99-rated card in TOTY, or a single highest rated item. The joint highest rated cards in FIFA 21's TOTY were Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewandowski and Messi with 98 rated items rewarded in game.
However, in 2019, the award was given to Messi, and he received a 99-rated TOTY item in FIFA 20 that same year. The same goes for Luka Modric in 2018 for FIFA 19. Therefore, based on the pattern, it is all but confirmed that not only with Lionel Messi be included in FIFA 22 TOTY (after narrowly being included as 12th man in FIFA 21), but he will have a 99-rated card in the promo.
The new question raised, however, is will there be an additional 99-rated item in game for TOTY, or will there be any special cards for Gianluigi Donnaruma, Pedri and Lewandowski for winning awards at this year's Ballon d'Or ceremony as well. Lewandowski was the favorite to win the award two years in a row, and this year he won the best Striker award, so we will have to see if maybe he gets a 99-rated card as well in FIFA 22's TOTY.
Congratulations to Lionel Messi on a record seventh Ballon d'Or win, and to all the nominees. We'll find out in TOTY who will be the best player in FIFA 22.
