Legendary rapper and producer Dr. Dre is working on new music for an upcoming Grand Theft Auto game, according to longtime friend and fellow rap legend Snoop Dogg.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Snoop was asked whether Dr. Dre had plans to release new music in the near future.
"I do know he's making great fucking music," Snoop replied. "And some of his music is connected to the GTA game that's coming out. So I think that that will be the way that his music will be released, through the GTA video game."
The only GTA game currently announced for released is the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, set for release digitally Nov. 11 and physically Dec. 7. Although it's possible Dr. Dre would release new music for the remasters — music of his appeared in the original Vice City — it seems more likely he would save new material for the next game in the main series. He hasn't released new music since his 2015 album Compton.
Dr. Dre has collaborated with Rockstar Games on more than music in the past. He made a small appearance in GTA Online's The Cayo Perico Heist update in late 2020.
Rockstar Games declined to comment on Snoop Dogg's comments, and Dr. Dre's representatives never answered Rolling Stone's attempts to contact them.
Reports from summer 2020 indicated GTA 6 was in development, but that it wouldn't arrive until at least 2024. If that's true, and Dre is planning to release new material through GTA 6, he has plenty of time to work on it.
