No Control Mapping for Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack

The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack doesn't let players remap controls for its Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis games.

The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack has only just launched, and many players were keen to jump into the service's new offerings straightaway. While its reception has so far been incredibly mixed from fans, one issue soon became apparent for many. It seems that for the added Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis games, there is no control mapping available for any of the games.

This might not be too problematic for everyone; the controls certainly take some getting used to but they're not impossible to deal with. For newer Nintendo players, however, they will likely feel pretty awkward. For example, with the original N64 controller being so different to the modern Joy-Cons, Nintendo have has to employ some work arounds.

The N64's "C-buttons" aren't present on the Joy-Cons. To use these button (when playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for example) players will need to hold down the ZR button and press one of the corresponding ABXY buttons on the Nintendo Switch controller. By default, the top and left C-buttons are mapped to X and Y, respectively. A and B on the N64 controller correspond to A and B on the Switch controllers, albeit in slight different locations. This leaves the right and bottom C-buttons unaccounted for, only accessible by holding down the ZR button and pressing A or B.

With no option to remap the controls to something a bit more intuitive, such as remapping the C-buttons to the directional pad, you might find that you stumble over yourself a little bit. Despite all of this, the Nintendo Online Expansion Pack is freshly launched. Hopefully, Nintendo will implement some changes further down the line to improve user experience.

The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack is available now at a 12 month subscription for $49.99.
