Overwatch 2 is one of the most popular games on the planet, but just how popular is it?
Overwatch 2 became an instant multiplayer smash hit when it released late last year, delivering the long-awaited sequel to its beloved hero shooter Overwatch. Overwatch 2 brought with it a total overhaul of the game's systems as well as a truckload of new content which continues to be regularly added to the game, ranging from new maps, heroes and seasonal events.
It's difficult to know just how many players are online in Overwatch 2 at any given time, though it can occasionally be estimated during periods with long queue times, such as those during the game's release. However, there are other methods to more precisely determine the number of players on Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 Player Count January 2023
According to activeplayer.io, a website that tracks daily and monthly player counts for popular multiplayer games, Overwatch 2 had over 23,000,000 players in the past 30 days. As of writing, the game had over 170,000 players on an hourly basis. These statistics cement Overwatch 2 as a massive game with a dedicated and consistent fanbase, which shouldn't come as a huge surprise given the mark the original left on the multiplayer gaming landscape.
Overwatch 2 is finishing up its Battle for Olympus event this week and moving into releasing content for the Lunar New Year. The former event pits seven heroes imbued with the divine powers of Greek gods and monsters in a limited-time deathmatch mode.
Blizzard is also running a special elimination leaderboard to determine which hero performs the best in the new mode. The winner of the event will receive a special prize: a statue to be featured on the game's Ilios Ruins map.
For the Chinese Lunar New Year, Blizzard is offering up cosmetics for Moira, including a legendary skin, as part of a Twitch Drop promotion.
