Major League Soccer team Philadelphia Union announced Tuesday that NFL running back Jay Ajayi will be its eMLS representative.
The Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowl player will represent the Union during the upcoming eMLS Cup campaign starting at the League Series One event in Philadelphia on Friday. Ajayi played 14 games for the Philadelphia Eagles including the team's only championship in Super Bowl LII against the New England Patriots.
"Philadelphia holds a special place in my heart so I am blessed to be able to represent the city in the esports realm and to become one of the first pro athletes to become a professional gamer. It combines two of my passions, soccer and gaming, Ajayi said in a press release.
"Jay has the fight, grit and wining mentality that Philadelphia is known for, and it quickly became clear to us that his love of the city, soccer and gaming made him a great fit for our esports team, Doug Vosik, Union Chief Marketing Officer, said in the announcement.
Philadelphia Union notably won the League Series 1 and 2 events last season. Additionally, Cormac "doolsta" Dooley won the eMLS Cup last season representing the Union.
eMLS League Series One, Ajayi's debut event, features 25 players challenging for the trophy and $7,500. The eMLS i spart of the EA Sports FIFA 20 Global Series.
