Pokémon GO's first non-binary character might have been confirmed by a recent Niantic blog post.
Pokémon GO Non-Binary: Blog Post Appears to Confirm Character as Non-Binary
In a Saturday post written from the perspective of Pokémon GO researcher Professor Willow, Willow describes the process of tracking Team GO Rocket. Willow teams up with Team Mystic leader Blanche partway through the adventure, and at one point refers to Blanche with a singular "they" pronoun.
"We set out in hopes of testing its tracking abilities, but the prototype kept malfunctioning, causing us to be led aimlessly to random PokéStops," the blog post reads. "Blanche became visibly upset, which tends to happen when things don't go to their carefully curated plans."
Niantic has yet to comment on the decision to use a they pronoun for Blanche. The developer previously refrained from using pronouns when it introduced Blanche on Twitter in August.
The use of singular they pronouns does not necessarily indicate Blanche is non-binary. Non-binary people can have a range of different gender identities, and using a singular they does not inherently equate to being non-binary.
Should Blanche be confirmed as non-binary, they would be the first such character in the Pokémon series.
