Pokemon Sword and Shield sales were a massive success for Nintendo. On May 7, Nintendo released fiscal year financial results showing the staggering numbers of Pokemon Sword and Shield sales. Pokemon Sword and Shield had the highest sales status at the end of the fiscal year, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which was only 11 days old when the fiscal year ended, was not far behind.

Pokemon Sword and Shield Sales Revealed

The slides from the meeting reveal as of March 31, Pokemon Sword and Shield had sold more than 17.37 million physical copies. The number of copies sold through Nintendo Switch bundles and digital sales is relatively low, but 70% of digital sales for the fiscal year were downloadable copies of packaged software like Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Sword and Shield also greatly contributed to the number of Nintendo Switch Online memberships which passed 15 million. In addition, the Nintendo Switch console has reached 55.77 million units worldwide.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is now the fourth best selling Pokemon game in the series following Pokemon Red, Green, and Blue, Pokemon Gold and Silver, and lastly Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Diamond and Pearl only sold 17.67 million copies so it is very likely that Sword and Shield will surpass it at some point especially with an expansion pack coming in June.
