Apex Legends is unique among battle royales for any number of reasons, from its movement to its approach to new content. One small but glaring difference is its lack of a waiting room before each match.
Where PUBG, Fortnite, Blackout and other prominent battle royales place players in a small sandbox for a few seconds while waiting for matches to fill up, Apex Legends has no such waiting room. After an in-game exploit revealed something that looks a lot like a waiting room, developer Respawn Entertainment explained why it decided not to use it in the finished game.

According to Respawn developer u/glutinousriceball, Apex Legends did originally have a waiting room. Like other battle royales, it would have let players pick up guns and shoot each other without dealing damage.
The team eventually decided to cut it from the game before release as load times were low enough that it became unnecessary.
