Richard Lewis' Esports Awards speech took the gaming community by storm as he called out some of video games' biggest media companies. Polygon, Kotaku and Waypoint were the three companies he criticized in his speech, challenging their coverage of esports.
Richard Lewis Esports: Richard Lewis Gives Impassioned Speech During Esports Awards
In Richard Lewis's speech he called out Polygon, Kotaku, and Waypoint saying,"They've consistently embarrassed themselves, writing pieces that expose their complete ignorance about our scene, the lack of sources and unoriginal opinions on topics we've talked to death for twenty years." Lewis continued by criticizing the articles written by these companies that lacked truth which could have been combated by doing a "cursory fact check."
Contrary to the majority of Richard Lewis's speech he did compliment Kotaku's senior writer Cecilia D'anastasio for being deserving of the award at the event for Esports Journalist of the Year. This speech by Richard Lewis was compelling, yet humbling because he invited more journalists to assist in creating better stories for the industry.
