Riot Account Name Change: Everything You Need to Know

Riot account name change is apparently necessary given some tweaks Riot Games made recently that have caused confusion among League of Legends players. Here's a guide to changing your Riot so you can be proud to see your name on top of the scoreboard.

Riot Account Name Change: Everything You Need to Know

League of Legends players this week have begun posting to forums about a message received from Riot Games forcing them to change from a League of Legends account to a Riot account.

The Riot accounts will more closely resemble how services like Battle.net work; instead of individual accounts for each game that Riot offers, you'll have the same account for each game Riot makes, including League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra and Teamfight Tactics.

As the new system is put in place, Riot will need to check the eligibility of every username to make sure that is unique. If it is not, players with a duplicate username will be prompted to change it. Even if your username is not unique, you can still receive the prompt to change it if you want to. Some players have reported receiving a message when trying to register their username as a Riot account, saying the username already exists. Riot Games preciously allowed usernames to overlap across regions. With Riot accounts, that does not appear to be the case. As such, players might have to create new usernames for Riot accounts, though it's important to make clear those are Riot account names and not Summoner names.

Most importantly, if your username is not unique, you absolutely will need to change it by Jan. 22, 2020 to log into any of your Riot accounts.
