Sony's State of Play presentation on Thursday included a sneak peek of Returnal, an upcoming roguelike with atmospherically creepy psychological horror vibes aplenty.
This game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive from Housemarque, so there's naturally more to set it apart from your average third-person shooter. Playing as Selene, trapped in a revealing (but seemingly tormenting) loop, you can dash and dart your way around enemies on a map that changes every time you die. In true roguelike fashion, enemies are in new places and are in differing amounts after each cycle start.
We can tell you all about it, sure. But you should probably take a look at the State of Play gameplay preview below to see if Returnal is your cup of tea. The exploration moments of the game in particular seem to bring on the horror elements some may love.
Returnal is coming to the PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2021. Unfortunately, this later spring launch date is due to a delay announced earlier this year, but that should give Housemarque the time to polish it to player expectations. We'll have to see if it's worth the wait then.
