Teamfight Tactics Patch 14.1 Preview: What to Expect

Riot Games

Teamfight Tactics Patch 14.1 is around the corner and Riot Mortdog revealed on social media what to expect for the first update of 2024.

Patch 14.1, while introducing the highly anticipated changes to Summoner's Rift in League of Legends, will also revamp Set 10: Remix Rumble in TFT. Mortdog, the Lead Designer on TFT, posted a lengthy explainer for Patch 14.1 on his X account detailing what to expect (and what not to expect). Set 10 is set to receive a major change which should drastically impact player strategies for all stages of the game.

Here's a look at what to expect for Patch 14.1, per Mortdog.

Teamfight Tactics Patch 14.1 Preview: What to Expect

The headline of the patch is 11 brand new portals. Mortdog detailed that these portals are more impactful than currently existing ones meaning games are going to become a bit more hectic and high roll. There are classic portals coming back, Radiant Blessing and Treasure Dragon named, and new portals as well including the Crab Rave.

As well, there will be balance changes as the team continues to improve the overall state of the game. One of the few nerfs coming is a hit to True Damage Emblems. True Damage Caitlyn has proven to be one of the best 4-Cost carries in the game, and this hit will likely continue to affect Senna, Ekko and Yasuo boards. Though, there are even more buffs planned compared to nerfs as Riot Games wants to open up more lines to victory.

Teamfight Tactics Patch 14.1 Preview: What Not to Expect

Mortdog listed two areas where players should not expect major changes: Open Forting and bug fixes. The latter isn't necessarily too concerning as Mortdog mentioned the development team is going to try to fit in some fixes, but the runway for this patch didn't lend itself much time to test and fix core issues. If there is anything game-breaking, Riot Games could always release a hotfix.

The former though, might be a big issue to some. Open Forting is currently a popular strategy early game, but Mortdog said there won't be any radical changes to player damage in 14.1. "Those kinds of changes take a bit more time to cook, and we don't want to rush them."

What is Open Forting in Teamfight Tactics?

Open Forting is essentially sacking the first few rounds of a game to build up a bigger economy. Loss streaking at the beginning is easier to build up gold at the expense of player health, plus you get Carousel priority for units and item components. With how popular it is right now, some players are experimenting with hard win streaking though it can be inconsistent. Riot Games is aware of how popular Open Forting is right now, but any changes will come at a later date.
