The Ray Gun Exploit in MW3 is Finally Patched

Activision / Sledgehammer Games

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III players might've noticed a cross-over they weren't quite expecting when playing multiplayer following the Season 1 update: the Ray Gun as a usable weapon.

It's not an official cross-over with Zombies or DMZ either, it's just an exploit that cheaters were taking advantage of bypassing RICOCHET to affect lobbies. If you saw a Ray Gun on a Scrapyard Domination, your first thought is probably time to back out and find another game. Or, maybe even log off until the exploit is fixed because no one needs cheaters, let alone cheaters with Ray Guns taking over lobbies.

Well, thankfully, Activision and Sledgehammer Games have remedied the exploit. They haven't quite removed it completely, but the solution should deter anyone from trying it again.

The Ray Gun Exploit in MW3 is Finally Patched

A post on the official Call of Duty Updates X account issued an update at night on Dec. 12: "Players illicitly accessing the Ray Gun in Multiplayer will now inflict self-damage upon use."

Now, it's unknown whether this was the best fix available to stop seeing the Ray Gun in multiplayer, or if the exploit could've just been patched immediately. It's possible this is just a short-term fix until the developers can remove the exploit completely. At least the developers are having some fun with it and players don't have to worry about getting killed by the Ray Gun anymore. Hackers and cheaters on the other hand is a different story as anti-cheat can always be improved upon.

Is The Ray Gun in MW3 Multiplayer?

No. Absolutely not. There might be some weapon blueprints that shoot out colored tracers that resemble the Ray Gun, but seeing anyone use the iconic Zombies weapon is cheating. If you came across it, don't go looking for it in the store. And, don't go looking for hacks to try and access it.
